Fixing Your Washing Machine: A Troubleshooting Guide

To fix a top-load or front-load washer that won't drain or spin, you'll need to know the specifics of your model. What follows is guidance on how to repair both kinds of washers.

Machine for Top-Loading Meals

Watch this do-it-yourself video for steps to take if your top-load washer stops spinning or draining water. You'll learn to inspect the drain pump for debris and hoses for blockages.

Make that there are no obstructions in the drain pipe or hose.

You should verify that your washer can remove water before proceeding. Try spinning the washer to see its behavior. Turn off the machine, remove the drain hose from the standpipe, and inspect the hose's end for any obstruction if water still won't drain. Lint or other debris can occasionally accumulate here and obstruct drainage. The next step is to test whether the water can be removed from the tub by simply allowing gravity to do the work by lowering the drain line into a bucket near the floor.

Look for a clog in your home's drain if water runs freely. To clear the drain in your home, get a plumber's snake. We will inspect the washer's drainage system if water does not appear to be flowing from the drain line. A shop vac may be able to remove the blockage and any remaining water from the washer. If that doesn't work, you'll have to empty the water from the washer's top and then use a shop vac to capture the remaining water in the tub. After you drain the water, turn off the power to the washer and remove the drain hose from the rear. Make sure there is no obstruction.

After checking that the drain hose is clear, disconnect the fill hoses from the washer's rear and switch off the water valves. After that, you can examine the drain pump by turning the washer upside down. Socks for babies and other little objects can find their way there. Find any little objects or trash by disengaging the hose. Take the drain pump out of the tub by removing the screws and making sure there is no obstruction there.

Verify that the drain pump is operational.

If you checked for a blockage and gravity led the water to the bucket, the drain pump is probably broken. The water won't be pushed out during the typical drain cycle if the drain pump isn't working properly. Get a new pump if the old one still turns over but doesn't move any water. A faulty gearshift or an excess of suds

After this, we will go over several ways to fix two popular top-loading washer models from Maytag, Whirlpool, and Kenmore. You can tell it's a VMW washer if it has a lid lock light and was purchased after 2010. A direct-drive washer is likely to be the one you have if your model is older than 2010.

We will begin by discussing how to fix issues with the vertical modular washers. An error code is triggered when a VMW encounters an issue, which is a nice feature. To find out which component failed, look at the error code. Follow the instructions in our How to Read a Vertical Modular Washer fault Code Display to find out how to inspect fault codes for VMW washers.

You will likely have a clearer picture of the problem once you know the error code. Error number F7E5 could appear if your washing machine isn't draining. If you get this code, it means that the shifter—also known as an actuator—that activates the washer's spin and drain modes is malfunctioning. If you need to replace the shifter on your vertical modular washer, just refer to our guide on how to do it.

If your washer isn't spinning, another possible error code is F0E2, which indicates oversudsing. This issue is obviously more noticeable than a broken shifter. Suds might really obstruct your washer's drain if it's full. A quarter cup of vegetable oil added to the water in the tub, followed by a drain and spin cycle, can remove suds. The next time you wash your hands, use less soap. For loads in HE washers, you really only use approximately one tablespoon of detergent.

Verify the clock.

We will go over some common problems with direct-drive washers in the next section. In order to remove any remaining water before the basket begins to spin, the direct-drive washer employs a neutral drain process, which involves turning on the drain pump. While the washer is draining, the basket will not spin. After the water drains out, you'll know the washer is operating properly because the motor will stop. The motor kicks back on, and the basket starts to spin.

On occasion, the neutral drain process could stymie direct drives. I can hear the motor running and the tub draining, but the washer won't begin spin mode. Because the timer regulates the motor's pause, replacing it is necessary to fix this issue.

However, let's verify that it is indeed broken before you go out and get a timer. Fill the machine up and let it agitate for a few minutes before starting a new wash cycle. Doing so will initiate the neutral drain procedure by resetting the drive system. To begin the spinning cycle, set the timer to the beginning and then turn the knob to the start. No opening the cover. Even if the engine is turning, the washer won't spin. Your timer is likely functioning properly if, after a few minutes, the washer stops spinning the basket before starting again. If the washer keeps draining until the cycle ends but doesn't spin the basket, it's time to get a new timer. Watch this video to learn how.

If you don't have a replacement timer for your washer, here's how to keep using it. Lifting the washer lid for a few seconds after the load is empty will manually pause the motor and end the neutral drain process, even though the motor is stuck in the draining position. The basket should begin to spin as soon as the lid is closed. If you don't get around to mending your washer, you can keep fooling it in this way.

Evaluate the cover's switch

The motor may have a faulty lid switch if it only operates in the agitation mode and never spins. To avoid any potential harm, this washer will not spin while the lid is open. If the lid switch is malfunctioning, the motor will not be able to run in the drain and spin modes.

How to check if the lid switch is working:

To ensure safety, unplug the washer.

Take off the console's end covers, and then unscrew the base to reveal the screws.

To access the plug for the lid switch wiring harness, pull the console forward a little and then turn it upside down and backward.

To attach the gray and tan wires that run to the timer, disconnect the wire harness and insert an insulated wire into the lid switch harness.

Put electrical tape over the plug to prevent the jumper wire from shorting out to the metal cabinet. In this way, the washer will falsely believe that the lid is closed, even though it isn't.

Carefully remove the bypassed harness and put the console back together.

Replace the washer's plug.

To test whether the motor is running, put the washer on the spin cycle. While the engine is running, do not open the cover. Serious harm could result from the interior spinning basket's rapid speed. Even if you lift the lid without using the switch, the motor will continue to run.

You know the lid switch is defective and needs replacing if the motor continues to run while the switch is bypassed.

Changing the lid switch on a typical top-loading washer is easy to do with the help of our do-it-yourself video.

As soon as you finish testing, disconnect the Washer and put the lid switch back where it was before by opening the console and taking out the insulated jumper wire. Return the cord to its socket on the lid switch. Make sure the lid switch is not left unattended!

A faulty timer or an issue with the motor's wiring could be to blame if the motor still won't run after bypassing the lid switch. A service professional can likely help you with that.

When a front-loading washer stops draining or spinning, the electronic controls will often indicate an error code.
